Door locks with latches come in four main types.
A Passage Latch
For an interior door that has knobs and a bolt, but no locking mechanism.

A Privacy Lock
For bedrooms and bathrooms, can he locked from the inside with a push button.
An Entrance Lock
Can be locked from both sides—with a key from outside, a push button inside. The type with a dead-locking plunger, which locks the bolt when the door is shut, is more difficult io pick. For extra security add a dead boltlock, which has a heavy bolt that slides into the jamb.
